The official visit of the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Romania, Gudsi Osmanov, to the city of Timișoara
On 5 December, the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Romania, Gudsi Osmanov, held an official meeting with the Mayor of Timișoara and Chairman of the ruling coalition party “Save Romania Union” (USR), Dominic Fritz. The discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation, establishing new ties between Timișoara and Azerbaijan, and advancing bilateral economic collaboration.
Ambassador Gudsi Osmanov highlighted the city’s multicultural character, openness to international cooperation, active youth engagement in public life, and its unique architectural heritage. He noted that these qualities significantly contributed to Timișoara being granted the title of European Capital of Culture in 2023, enhancing its international recognition and showcasing its cultural potential. Touching upon Azerbaijan–Romania relations, the Ambassador stressed the mutual benefits of cooperation between the regions of the two countries.
For his part, Mayor Dominic Fritz reaffirmed Timișoara’s commitment to the concept of “city diplomacy” and expressed interest in strengthening relations with Azerbaijan. He also spoke about the European Values Award established by the city, as well as the annual Timișoara City Summit, describing these initiatives as important platforms that connect the city with European discussions and values.
Ahead of Christmas, which is officially celebrated in Romania, and the Feast of Saint Nicholas, the Ambassador visited the “Holy Three Hierarchs” Cathedral — one of Romania’s most important religious monuments, built in the mid-20th century in Timișoara.
As part of the visit, Ambassador Gudsi Osmanov also toured the “Inocențiu Klein” Senior Center, operating under the Timișoara Municipal Social Assistance Directorate. The Azerbaijani diplomat spoke warmly with the residents and presented them with small festive gifts and sweets on behalf of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Romania.
It should be noted that Timișoara is one of Romania’s most developed urban centers, known for its competitive industry, IT sector, architectural heritage, and multicultural environment. The city ranks third in the country in terms of population and area. Timișoara is also regarded as a symbol of freedom and democracy in Romania, as the 1989 Revolution that changed the course of the country’s history began precisely here.
